Quantitative Measurement of Radio Frequency Interference for SMOS Mission

The Earth Exploration Satellite Service (EESS) for passive sensing has a primary frequency allocation in the 1400–1427 MHz band. All emissions unauthorized this band are called RFI (Radio Frequency Interference). SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission is greatly perturbed by impeding ocean salinity retrieval, especially coastal areas such as SCS (South China Sea), where observed data been discarded massively. At present, there no way to eliminate impact on retrieved salinity, other than detecting shutting down from sources. However, it may be effective scientific sense if can quantified applied retrieval process. Therefore, study proposes an measuring method that investigate contamination both prominent moderate respects, aroused either on-site or nearby continents. Based proposed method, two levels of hierarchical maps region, including separated one merged one, presented discussed, indicating more severe northern western SCS. Moreover, verify generalization open oceans far continents, area middle central Pacific selected tested. result shows few unattended which consistent with authors’ knowledge. This presents concept “RFI map” describe contamination, will hopefully help researchers comprehend state intuitively assist statistically.
